What's the Story?

NISEKOI follows the story of Raku Ichijou (voiced by Koki Uchiyama), the son of the leader of a yakuza gang, and Chitoge Kirisaki (Nao Toyama), the daughter of the leader from their rival gang. They have been matched up by their fathers and must pretend to be a couple to maintain peace between the two gangs who are on the verge of war. Raku tries to navigate high school life and balance his mismatched relationship with Chitoge while dealing with the other girls at his school who are trying to win his heart.

Is It Any Good?

This romantic comedy has a ridiculous premise and lots of slapstick violence. Nisekoi is a quirky anime that feels like a reverse Romeo and Juliet tale, where the families are trying to keep their kids together as opposed to apart. Raku and Chitoge are funny together; they're combative but also have their sweet moments as well. Some of the women who are in competition to win Raku's heart have somewhat stereotypical personalities, but their clashes do highlight the different aspects of the main characters. The story is also incomplete; since this is an anime that doesn't cover the whole comic it's based upon don't expect a complete story with an ending. Instead the story feels like a slice-of-life anime where we get a lot of filler events but not too much that progresses the story.
