North of North
What's the Story?
In NORTH OF NORTH, Siaja (Anna Lambe) is an Inuk woman who has grown up under the expectations of her community. She's married to the town's beau (Kelly William), has a 7-year-old daughter, and finds herself trapped by these gender roles. Determined to reinvent herself, Siaja challenges traditions as she balances motherhood, a new job, and breaking a few rules.
Is It Any Good?
This show is funny, authentic and bold—but also full of heart. North of North has a refreshing quality to it that stems from its unique setting and diverse stories. It sheds light on underrepresented voices and brings fresh perspectives to the forefront. While there are plots about sex and strong use of language, the core message is about unity and overcoming challenges. It doesn't hurt that it has some great acting as well.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the representation in North of North. Why is it important to see Inuit community stories on screen? What are the benefits of highlighting stories from distinct communities?
The show demonstrates how community expectations for women don't align with Siaja's personal goals. Is it fair for an individual to want different things for themselves? What are some ways we can challenge traditional views?
There's a delicate relationship between the town planner and some of the community members who see her as an outsider. Who do you think should lead a local community? Are there benefits of bringing outsiders as experts for local improvement?
