What's the Story?

OFFLINE LOVE happens when Japanese singles travel to Nice, France, to find romance without the use of phones or social media. They engage in group activities and one-on-one dates, relying solely on real-world interactions to form connections. Without digital distractions, they must express their feelings directly and write letters. As they explore the picturesque streets of Nice, they must decide who they truly bond with—without the safety net of online personas.

This patient Japanese dating show is beautifully shot and feels more like romance fiction than reality TV. Offline Love's digital detox brings out deep connections with intimate conversations and adorable letter correspondences. The soundtrack and Nice's scenic backdrop elicit an immersive, dreamlike ambience, and a mix of creatives and athletes adds variety to the cast and storytelling.

The multi-generational commentators, a staple of Japanese reality TV, reinforce the show's old-school dating philosophy. But they can ramble on and the general pacing also feels slow or even flat. Undeniably melodramatic and visually meditative, the show would make some swoon and weep–and others doze off.
