Olympo
What's the Story?
In OLYMPO, a group of elite teenage athletes trains at the Pirineos High-Performance Center, a cutting-edge Olympic prep facility backed by a mysterious corporate sponsor. Among them are Amaia (Clara Galle), a driven synchronized swimmer pushing herself beyond safe limits; Zoe (Nira Osahia), a new arrival with a hidden past; and Roque (Agustín Della Corte), the closeted captain of the rugby team navigating identity and team loyalty. As tensions rise under the weight of competition, secrets surface including doping scandals, romantic entanglements, and personal betrayals.
Is It Any Good?
This steamy sports teen drama has all the addictive ingredients: an exciting newbie cast, high-stakes competitions, and provocative themes like doping, sabotage, and dark secrets. Olympo's lead performances are alluring if not particularly nuanced. Much of the show's appeal rides on the charisma of its visually striking actors rather than their emotional range or depth.
Despite its edgy storylines, the show rarely delivers the narrative punch these topics deserve. It's all bold on the surface but lacks the weight to make any of it truly hit. Olympo might be enjoyable and bingeable but doesn't leave much to dwell on once it ends. With all its aesthetic confidence, it still falls short of having that sharp, cocky flair that might have made it more memorable.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about if Olympo meaningfully challenges the ethics of elite sports culture. Or does it end up reinforcing the very systems it critiques (e.g., glorifying performance at all costs)?
How does the show's portrayal of LGBTQ+ athletes compare to how these identities are typically represented in mainstream teen dramas? Do you think it offers meaningful representation?
What role does corporate sponsorship (i.e., Olympo as a brand) play in shaping the characters' moral decisions, and how might this reflect real-world dynamics between athletes and commercial interests?
