What's the Story?

ONSIDE: MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER is a docuseries that follows Major League Soccer (MLS) during the 2024 season. Cameras follow clubs like LA Galaxy, FC Cincinnati, Atlanta United, Inter Miami CF, and others as they train, welcome new players, and face off with other teams to win the championship. Episodes introduce us to up-and-coming players like former Barçelona footballer Riqui Puig and Philadelphia Union player Cavan Sullivan, who began his professional soccer career at the age of 14. They also feature interviews with coaches and owners, including Inter Miami co-owner and president David Beckham. Viewers also get to watch as players try to find balance between playing the sport and living their daily lives.

The sports docuseries offers soccer fans a chance to watch some of Major League Soccer's 30 teams train hard, play hard, and vie for the league championship. It highlights the passion the players—especially the younger ones—have for the sport. It also points to some of the challenges that come with being a professional soccer player, including the risk of being released from your team or suddenly being traded to another club. The time it takes for younger or new players to adjust to being a professional athlete or to a new club is also highlighted. But Onside: Major League Soccer also offers lots of archive footage of high-energy matches that will satisfy most fans of the sport. It's possible that fans of European football may not be as drawn to it, but U.S. and Canadian soccer fans will want to check it out.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about Major League Soccer. Given its lower profile when compared to European football, why have superstar athletes like David Beckham and Lionel Messi played for MLS clubs over the years?

  • Onside: Major League Soccer is a promotional vehicle for the league and its players. Will MLS ever get the same kind of international media coverage that European and South American football clubs get? Why?
