What's the Story?

OOKU: THE INNER CHAMBERS takes place in a fictional feudal Japan during the Edo period. During this time, a strange disease called the "redface pox" has begun rapidly spreading. It only targets men and has a high mortality rate. Rapidly the male population declines; men are now scarce and considered very precious amongst the population for their role in reproduction. Women take over men's previous roles in Japanese society, while men are raised up in new roles that revolve around reproduction. In this world, the new Japanese Shogun is a woman who requires the most beautiful and gifted living men to be sent to serve her in her Inner Chambers.

This fictional historical drama provides a dark but interesting look into an alternate timeline that asks what if power and status shifted from men to women in feudal Japan. Ooku: The Inner Chambers is a unique anime series that focuses on personal motivations and political plots. The Ooku is a cold and cruel place, filled with abuse, deceitful schemes, and power struggles -- this is where the series shines. Watching characters try to navigate around backstabbers, setups, and strange rules in competition for power or status can be captivating. The men of the Ooku are principled and mostly moral -- it's interesting to watch these characters adapt to their situation. That said, too many characters, plots, and schemes can feel a bit melodramatic.

It would have been interesting to see more of was the world outside of the Ooku -- viewers only get a few insights into how feudal Japan has changed with the rapid decline of men. And for a series whose premise revolves around such a drastic shift in responsibilities and gender roles, further exploration of these topics would give it more depth.
