Pancho Villa: The Centaur of the North
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Based on a book by Manuel A. Machado, Jr., Pancho Villa: El Centauro del Norte, or PANCHO VILLA: THE CENTAUR OF THE NORTH is a historical drama starring Jorge A. Jimenez as José Doroteo Arango Arámbula, a.k.a. Francisco "Pancho" Villa, telling his life story. Beginning with his assassination in 1923, the Mexican revolutionary and former governor of Chihuahua takes us back to when he was a poor teenager helping to take care of his mother and siblings. After killing the owner of the hacienda he worked on for sexually assaulting his younger sister, Doroteo Durango escapes to the mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental and joins a gang of bandits who rob from the wealthy to feed the poor. He changes his name to Francisco Pancho Villa to protect his identity and to begin cultivating his legacy as the most prominent and iconic figure of the ten-year Mexican Civil War. Throughout it all, Pancho Villa's loyalty, military savvy, and brutality are revealed, as is his desire for social justice, women, and international fame.
Is It Any Good?
This violent series stays true to the broader story of the Mexican Revolution despite the fact that it's being told from Francisco Pancho Villa's point of view. Like any historical drama, Pancho Villa takes dramatic license with the smaller details, including the exchanges between Villa and the people he interacts with. However, these fictionalized interactions help show how the real man evolved from being ruthless and opportunistic to someone who felt the need to fight for a cause greater than his own. It also reveals how Pancho Villa made use of available media to create and control his heroic public persona, despite the fact that he never ceased to be a robustly imperfect person in his military career and personal life.
All of this is woven into the fabric of México's bloody road to becoming a constitutional republic, which is brought to life with the help of consistent sequences of intense battle scenes, gritty executions, and other dark moments. Those who aren't up on their Mexican Civil War history might need to pay close attention to keep track of the skirmishes, government takeovers, and constant shifting of alliances. But Pancho Villa: The Centaur of the North makes it easy to understand why Francisco Pancho Villa's legacy endures today.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the real Francisco "Pancho" Villa. While most consider him a revolutionary hero, others claim that he is a glorified criminal. Why?
How accurate is Pancho Villa: The Centaur of the North's representation of the Mexican Civil War? Since it's a drama, does it have to based on fact?
