What's the Story?

PLUNDERER is set in a world where people have their "Count" magically printed on their bodies. When a person's count gets to zero, they disappear forever into the abyss. After her mother is dragged away, Hina (voiced by Sarah Wiedenheft) sets out on a journey to find the Legendary Ace and give him the mysterious orb her mother left behind.

A potentially interesting fantasy premise is kind of ruined by sexual harassment being used for laughs. Plunderer does a lot to try to justify Licht's "pervert" behavior, the frequent jokes about harassment, and a general vibe of pressuring people into uncomfortable situations. Characters don't model healthy consent, and that's a red flag. The uncomfortable humor may take a back seat in later episodes, but you have to get pretty far into the series for that.

Even then, the world-building is a bit convoluted, and the story lacks clear themes that are positive and engaging. Some viewers may enjoy the power-heavy premise and the twists and turns in the plot. Others, though, may find it a slog. The show definitely has a fan base, but it's not for everyone, and there are better shows to spend your time on.

  • Families can talk about gender representation. Do male and female characters have healthy, equal relationships in this anime? Do you admire anything about the characters? Do you find anything unrealistic or demeaning?
