What's the Story?
POOR DEVIL (Pobre Diablo) is a Spanish animated series about the anti-Christ and his desire to perform in musical theatre. A woman gives birth to a horned baby named Stan (JoaquĆn Reyes/Lucien Dodge) after her husband, without Satan's (Ignatius Farray/James Mathis III) knowledge, sold her soul to the devil in return for a better acting career. Six hundred and sixty five months later, Stan has grown up and has one month before he becomes of "diabolical age," which is old enough to destroy humanity. Satan can't wait for him to set off the apocalypse, but Stan would much rather sing and dance.
Is It Any Good?
This irreverent animated comedy offers lots of adult-oriented humor as Stan negotiates family expectations versus his Broadway-bound dreams. Adding to the diabolical fray are Mefisto the cat (Ernesto Sevilla/Jason Marnocha) and cousin Samuel (Gakian/Laura Post), who also have some demonic jobs to carry out. Meanwhile, the references to Hollywood films and TV shows, as well as appearances by characters modeled after the real Keanu Reeves, former basketball player Michael Jordan, and others are also fun. Not everyone will find the story appropriate, given the show's premise, but for adults who like this sort of thing, Poor Devil delivers a mixture of smart and silly laughs.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about foreign comedy series that are dubbed into English. How is the humor maintained when it originates from another culture? Is this series is successful in keeping the laughs despite not being originally produced in English?
Is Poor Devil produced to poke fun at people's religious beliefs? Where do you think the line is for a comedy like this?
