Ranma 1/2
What's the Story?
RANMA ½ is a romantic martial arts comedy about Ranma Saotome (voiced by David Errigo Jr. and Suzie Yeung), Akane Tendo (voiced by Valeria Rodriguez), and the many eccentric characters who want to either fight or romance them. Ranma is cursed to change bodies when splashed with hot and cold water. Akane is the martial arts princess of Furinkan High School. Newly engaged via arranged marriage, the two are forced to deal with mishaps and hijinks as they navigate family obligations, budding romance, and inconvenient interference from everyone else.
Is It Any Good?
This body-swapping teen comedy is a faithful but updated remake of a beloved anime classic. Ranma ½ has wacky but endearing characters that are easy to relate to — even the most ridiculous ones. The show does a good job portraying the dramatic highs and lows of high school life and coming-of-age.
Set in 1980's Japan, the new series maintains characters' problematic perspectives on gender. While these ideas sometimes feel outdated, they are still relevant to modern audiences. The show seems to be setting up these traditional gender roles for critique, but it remains to be fully seen how far the remake will go in challenging the sexism and transphobia that were part of the original series.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about gender roles. How do Akane, Ranma, and reoccurring side characters go against gender stereotypes?
Do the characters demonstrate healthy ways of getting and giving consent? Consider how consent is present or absent in the show when it comes to sexual imagery, the portrayal of substance use, and the mistaken identity plot points.
Why do so many characters resort to violence? Does fighting solve the problems? What are some more constructive, positive ways the characters could respond to conflict?
Compare the 1994 anime to the 2024 remake. Does the remake try to update the series for a new generation? If so, what changes do they make, and how successful are they?
