What's the Story?

REBELDE (2022) is a contemporary reboot of the popular Mexican musical telenovela of the same name. The Elite Way School, a.k.a. EWS, is an international boarding school known for its music program, and for launching the musical careers of many of its alums. Under the watchful eyes of school director Celina Ferrer (Estafanía Villarreal) and rule enforcer Perfect Lourdes (Karla Gazcón), first-year students like social media star Jana Cohen (Azul Guaita Bracamontes), the wealthy Luka Colucci (Franco Masini), Californian M.J. Sevilla (Andrea Chaparro), and the rebellious Andi Agosti (Lizeth Selene) begin their first term in hopes of building their own careers. Also joining them is Colombian rapper Guillermo "Dixon" Alvarez (Jerónimo Cantillo), and scholarship recipient Estebán Torres (Sergio Mayer Mori), who's not sure if he's going to fit in with the crowd. They've all got talent, so when upperclass students Emilia Alo (Giovanna Grigio) and Sebastián "Sebas" Langarica (Alejandro Puente) set up tryouts for the Musical Excellence Program (MEP), they are anxious to prove that they have what it takes. But when a hazing event goes terribly wrong, things quickly take a strange turn, and makes life at school even more interesting.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 1 ):
Kids say ( 4 ):

Much like the original Argentinian and Mexican series, Rebelde meets all the expectations of a teen-oriented drama. There are lots of romantic triangles, frenemies, parent-child conflicts, and school-related discord that is woven throughout musical performances from the cast. Meanwhile, the reboot goes out of its way to be inclusive, and features individuals from various countries, backgrounds, and sexual orientations. But some of the characters feel generic, and as the narrative progresses, you can't help but feel that you've seen most of it before. Nonetheless, folks who like this sort of thing may find it fun and edgy enough to watch.
