What's the Story?

Set in the rural town of Wausau, Wisconsin, REVIVAL follows Deputy Dana Cypress (Melanie Scrofano) as she investigates a mysterious phenomenon known as "Revival Day," when the recently dead return to life as fully functioning "Revivers." Her younger sister, Em (Romy Weltman), is among them. As Dana investigates a shocking murder that could implicate either the living or the dead, she's drawn into a dark web that reaches beyond crime-solving, into questions of loyalty, identity, and what it really means to be alive.

This supernatural thriller draws viewers into its snowy Midwestern setting with effective worldbuilding. Revival's tone is steeped in small-town strangeness, evoking the moody pull of other genre pieces without feeling like a straight imitation. There's an ambivalence in its atmosphere—part horror, part dry wit—that makes the place feel lived-in yet unpredictable. Less grim than some of its inspirations, it still has the sharp edges of a Fargo-style noir: no glamour, just stark landscapes, prickly relationships, and an understated tension that gradually builds.

The tight script moves efficiently through its varying beats while keeping the ensemble's intersecting threads clear. That said, the story does lean on a hodgepodge of genre formulas—gore, investigations, buried secrets—but it blends them with enough tonal control to keep the momentum steady. Strong lead performances––portraying the central trauma-filled yet ever-striving sisterhood––ground the more fantastical elements in believable emotions. Revival finds just enough grit, ambience, and humanity to keep you coming back for the next chill in the air.

  • In what ways does the show explore the blurred line between the living and the dead? How does it address moral and legal questions about the rights of the Revivers? Are the living portrayed as more dangerous than the dead, and what does that say about the central theme?

  • What does the show say about trust and loyalty in a community? Do any characters grow closer as a result of the Revivers crisis, and what does that suggest about resilience in the face of fear?
