What's the Story?

In R.L. STINE'S PUMPKINHEAD, Sam (Bean Reid) moves to a new town with his mom and older brother, Nick (Seth Isaac Johnson), after his father's death. He feels disconnected from his family, and, acting out, steals a prized pumpkin. When his brother finds out and tries to return it, he disappears. The adults in town forget about him, so it's up to Sam and his new friend Becka (Adeline Lo) to discover the truth and break the curse—even if it means fighting a terrifying scarecrow.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

This movie is in an unusual middle ground: too mild for horror fans and too scary for those just starting with the genre. R.L. Stine's Pumpkinhead is, however, a good option for teens who are curious about slasher-type thrills. It has a level of scary similar to the first season of Stranger Things, and relies heavily on its soundtrack and sound effects for jump scares. It also creates a sense of nostalgia, with a 1990s vibe where characters still use landlines and flip phones. The open ending might leave younger viewers with mixed feelings.
