Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In ROKKA: BRAVES OF THE SIX FLOWERS, Adlet Mayer (voiced in English dub by Robbie Daymond) travels with Princess Nachetanya (Abby Trott) on a mission to save the world. Having been appointed by the Goddess of Fate as two of the six Braves who will defeat the Demon God, they must first find their fellow warriors. But when they arrive at the legendary rendezvous point, they discover that seven Braves have arrived -- and that's one too many. Before they can fight the Demon God, they must first uncover who among them is the imposter.
Is It Any Good?
This mystery action series has an interesting premise but is ultimately a disappointing execution of an otherwise captivating fantasy plot. Rokka: Braves of the Six Flowers has potential to be a complex, heartfelt look at a group of heroic teens overcoming their past trauma to protect each other and the world. There's interesting world building, and a hint of nuanced messages about strength, trust, and friendship. But the distrust, violence, and lack of cooperation all feel over-the-top and drag out the mystery-solving to unnecessary lengths. While that plot drags on, everything else moves so fast that it feels contrived and underdeveloped.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about cultural representation in media. Is the Mesoamerican influence on the culture in this fantasy show an example of cultural appreciation, appropriation, or something else?
Talk about positive role models. Are any of the characters in the show positive role models? What characters traits do they have that you'd like to model in your own life?
Talk about violence and conflict resolution. Why do the characters try to solve the mystery through violence? Does fighting help them solve problems? What are other ways they could have discovered the truth and revealed the imposter?
