What's the Story?

SCAM GODDESS is the latest iteration of the popular true crime podcast of the same name, hosted by comedian and actress Laci Mosley (A Black Lady Sketch Show). Each episode focuses on a different charlatan—from a town treasurer who used city funds to finance her million-dollar horse-collecting habit to a fake ex-Google tech bro who fleeces a town with a high-tech scheme, walking away with $1.9 million in investor money. The host, usually dressed in a themed outfit that visually nods to the crime, speaks with the scam's victims and tries to uncover how the perpetrators managed to pull off such audacious acts.

The transition from podcast to TV series isn't always smooth sailing, and some viewers may find the host's bubbly, comedic approach to the interviews in poor taste. After all, the Scam Goddess stories involve real people whose lives were deeply affected by grifters and their schemes. The original podcast has a snarky tone, with Mosley and her guest (often a fellow comedian) recounting these stories and cracking jokes nonstop. But when you're showing up solo and in-person to these towns and talking to people who actually lived through the crimes, that same approach doesn't quite land. It's borderline tacky—though never mean-spirited—and when Mosley sits down for a chat with one of the criminals, she makes her disapproval of his heinous acts crystal clear.
