Sean Combs: The Reckoning
What's the Story?
SEAN COMBS: THE RECKONING is a docuseries that examines the many criminal allegations made against Sean "Diddy" Combs throughout his career. It's September 2024, and cameras are following the rapper and business owner a few days before he's indicted and arrested on felony charges that include racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, and transportation to engage in prostitution. As moments from Combs' visit to New York and subsequent arrest are shown, interviews with former friends and colleagues like co-founder of Bad Boy Entertainment Kirk Burrowes and former personal assistant Capricorn Clark, music producers like Tim Dawg (aka Tim Patterson), and artists like Kalenna Harper and Aubrey O'Day share their stories about what it was like working with Combs, and in many cases, how he victimized them. Many of those interviewed also share their memories of growing up with him or moving up in the music industry together, often offering their opinions about how his childhood continues to affect him today. His rumored involvement in specific criminal events for which he has not been charged, such as the 1996 murder of Tupac Shakur, is also discussed. Archive footage of past interviews with Combs, along with clips of performances, behind-the-scenes moments, violent altercations, and his arrest, is also featured.
Is It Any Good?
Executive produced by Sean Combs' rival 50 Cent, the subjective docuseries blends speculation about Combs' motives and rumored misconduct with disturbing accounts of (alleged) abuse offered by survivors. Despite some effort to separate fact from conjecture throughout Sean Combs: The Reckoning, the overall production feels like an awkwardly organized collection of tabloid entertainment narratives and disturbing victim impact statements, all of which are offered within the context of the September 26, 2024 federal indictments against Combs. The media mogul was convicted of and sentenced to prison time in 2025 for only two of the lesser counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, but this doesn't stop the overall characterization of Combs as a quiet but violent, jealous, power-hungry, and vindictive man who's earned enough money to get away with doing terrible things. Interviews conducted with two of the jurors who served on the case also underscore this point. It's biased, but Sean Combs: The Reckoning doesn't take away from the seriousness of the survivors' truths presented here, but it's nearly impossible to walk away from the overall production without thinking that it's been created with a very specific agenda in mind.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about documentaries. Are they supposed to be as objective or unbiased as possible? Is it acceptable for a documentary to tell a story from a very specific point of view?
Is the purpose behind showing people using drugs or committing acts of violence in Sean Combs: The Reckoning to be entertaining? To upset viewers? Something else?
