Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Sex: Unzipped is a comedic, documentary-style look at sex. Hosted by hip-hop star Saweetie and featuring a deep ensemble of comedians and puppets, the show has segments on every phase of a sexual relationship, from dating to intercourse. The comedians and puppets are frank and bawdy, and content includes descriptions of sex, puppet nudity, puppet simulated sex, puppet ejaculation, and instructional segments on sex acts. But the hour-long special is sincere in its efforts to promote things like sex positivity, safe sex, and communication in relationships. It's also notable that the special contains very little content related to alcohol or drugs in its skits and anecdotes, and therefore doesn't equate being sexually active with drinking or drugs, like a lot of other pop culture does. The focus is mostly on how to find, cultivate, and maintain healthy sexual relationships. The ensemble provides a wide variety of perspectives, is accepting of all sexual tastes and preferences, and conveys the idea that healthy sexuality is an important part of a person's identity.
Is It Any Good?
One lesser-known rule of comedy is that once puppets get involved, the jokes basically write themselves. To Sex: Unzipped's credit, the comedy series could have just done a few raunchy sketches with its sex-positive puppet posse and called it a day. Instead, it's essentially a variety show that is sincere in its efforts to promote healthy sexual relationships, inclusiveness, self-realization, and safe sex. Not every joke or anecdote lands, but Sex: Unzipped packs its edutainment with a lot of practical advice that many viewers need to hear (and, in some segments, see).
