What's the Story?

Based on the 1999 Japanese TV series Koori no Sekai, the K-thriller SIREN'S KISS follows an insurance investigator who develops feelings for a potential serial killer. Former police detective Cha Woo-seok (Wi Ha-joon) is a sensitive but talented and determined special investigator committed to uncovering life insurance fraud for Nonghyup Insurance Company. When he gets an anonymous tip about Han Seol-ah (Park Min-young), the chief auctioneer at Royal Auction, about her possible involvement in the mysterious deaths of her three former lovers, Woo-seok is determined to know more. The police can't seem to find any evidence of her involvement, but the more he learns about the enigmatic Seol-ah, including the fact that her late partners had taken out Nonghyup life insurance policies on her, the more he believes that she killed them. But during his unrelenting investigation, Woo-seok becomes increasingly drawn to her, and starts to doubt his original suspicions.

The stylish, slow-burn thriller combines romance, mystery, and a gripping crime investigation. The Siren's Kiss narrative is created to keep us guessing about whether Seol-ah is a seductive predator or an unlucky woman who's caught in a conspiracy, a possibility that gains traction thanks to her friends' and colleagues' growing suspicions, an alleged suicide, and an unnervingly strange CEO and art collector (played by Kim Jung-hyun). Meanwhile, Seol-ah's serene and professional public behavior is impenetrable, which makes it difficult to tell whether she's heartbroken, melancholic, or internally negotiating something more insidious when she's alone. This makes the growing chemistry between her and Cha Woo-seok all the more interesting. It's a dark story, but there are some humorous moments, especially when Woo-seok manages to beat various local insurance fraudsters at their own game. Siren's Kiss isn't intended to be an easy, light watch, but it's hard not to get caught up in it.
