What's the Story?
SNOWBALL EARTH takes place in 2025, when an alien species named Intergalactic Kaiju invaded Earth to attack humanity. Humanity fights back, forming an international team called the Anti-Kaiju Defense Force or E-RDE. The son of one of the scientists on the E-RDE, Tetsuo Yabusame (voiced in English by Griffin Burns), despite being very shy and socially anxious, becomes a prodigy in robot warfare against the Kaiju and is nicknamed "The Savior" at just nine years old. After being in cryosleep for eight years, he wakes up alone in an ice-age-level frozen Tokyo. When he meets an underground civilization of ice-age survivors, he helps defend them from the Kaiju and tries to make friends and fit in with them.
Is It Any Good?
Though this anime has a plot that isn't totally unique, it's still an enjoyable watch with likable characters. In Snowball Earth, it's hard not to empathize with Tetsuo, who faces social anxiety and loses his only friend; viewers will root for him to succeed in finding friends. There's enough action for the story to feel fast-paced, but not so much that it feels overwhelming and repetitive. Violence, which happens a lot in battle form, isn't too graphic or disgusting. Overall, it's enjoyable and an interesting story.

Families can talk about how everyone tells Tetsuo that he's "The Savior." Do you think he feels pressure taking on that role?
Do you think the underground survivors were justified in being suspicious of Tetsuo? Would you be too if you were in that situation?
