What's the Story?

SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY, an installment of the Southern Charm franchise, showcases the drama among the staff at a trendy South Carolina nightclub. Southern Charm cast member and restaurant owner Leva Bonaparte, along with her husband Lamar, owns Republic, which is located on Charleston's famous King Street along with several other of their establishments. Ensuring that the nightclub is catering to VIP clients while offering lots of high energy entertainment is D.J. and VIP Manager Maddi Reese, along with VIP hosts Joe Bradley, Mia Alario, and Bradley Carter, servers Lucía Peña, Emmy Sharrett, and bartenders Will Kulp and T.J. Dinch. Rounding out the group is the eccentric Grace Lilly, the VIP Concierge, and Mikel Simmons, who has been temporarily suspended from his VIP hosting duties. Together they must ensure that the club goes beyond the expectations of its patrons, and that it makes a lot of money.

The nightclub-set series offers all the unscripted drama one has come to expect from the Southern Charm franchise. In-between romantic strife and immature, catty relationships among the Republic staff, there are a few brief and superficial conversations about professionalism, mainly as it pertains to maintaining the club's image and bringing in as much money as possible to all of Leva Bonaparte's business ventures. While the overall series will remind you of unscripted shows like Vanderpump Rules, Southern Hospitality remains true to its roots by attempting to contextualize all of this within Southern culture and community, a few of which border on stereotypes about women, clothes, and attitudes. Folks who aren't drawn to this type of entertainment won't find much here. Meanwhile, if you're a fan of the franchise, you'll find the series to be a bit of a departure from its predecessors.

  • Families can talk about the popularity of unscripted series. What is it about them that viewers find entertaining? How much of what they feature reflect the reality of people's day-to-day lives?

  • Many of the cast members on Southern Hospitality have, or are pursuing, careers outside of their job at Republic. Is this routinely highlighted throughout the series? Why?
