What's the Story?

In SPY HIGH, it's 2010 and a teenager in a wealthy suburb of Philadelphia has been summoned to the vice principal's office at his high school. The vice principal believes the student has been selling drugs out of his bedroom at home, and she says she has evidence. He denies it, but wonders how the school has photos of him off campus. How is the school accessing images of his life at home?

Fine filmmaking and a germane subject pair to a winning degree in this kicky docuseries. Spy High switches points of view often enough to allow viewers to feel like they're getting a 360-degree perspective on the sensitive subject of internet privacy. Some interviews feel a tad repetitive, but there's plenty to dig into here.

The poignant voices of the Black community who've been living in the margins of a dominant wealthy White world enrich this show. Teens and parents will have plenty to discuss after watching this relevant series.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about communication in Spy High. How important is internet safety to you? What do you do to keep your side of the street clean?

  • As soon as parents start questioning the school about their son's webcam having been accessed (by the school) when he was at home, accusations begin flying. How does integrity weather gossip storms?
