What's the Story?
STAR WARS: VISIONS PRESENTS -THE NINTH JEDI continues the story of Lah Kara, a young girl from a Jedi family whose father has been kidnapped by the nefarious General Nawaan. Aided by an old friend of her father's, Margrave Juro, and his ship's crew, Lah Kara searches the universe for her father while attempting to make Jedi allies at every stop along the way.
Is It Any Good?
The Star Wars universe may have limitless storytelling possibilities, but it often seems to return to its beginnings. The Ninth Jedi seems to set up a unique situation, a world where the Sith and Jedi no longer exist and all lightsabers have disappeared. Within minutes of this opening set-up, however, those interesting ideas are abandoned. Lightsabers are back, a rogue spacecrew of Jedi are recruiting others to the cause, and a black-masked, heavy-breathing villain with a raspy voice is trying to take over the universe. Everything is not only familiar but overly familiar -- though it does draw some inspiration from outside the Star Wars universe. Protagonist Lah Kara looks precisely like an older version of another young girl who's searching for her parents: Spirited Away's Sen. Even the promise of anime-inspired animation fails to capitalize on that genre's chaotic urgency. This is not Star Wars for fans excited about the limitless possibilities of the universe, but for those who simply want to watch A New Hope for the thousandth time (which isn't the worst thing in the world).
