Stranger Things: Season 1
What's the Story?
Bad things don't usually happen in STRANGER THINGS' peaceful Midwest town of Hawkins, Indiana, in 1983. But when 12-year-old Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) goes missing one night, it's just the first in a series of mysterious happenings. Stricken by the loss of their best friend, Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin) investigate a series of sinister occurrences with the help of Mike's sister Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and her boyfriend, Steve (Joe Keery). Meanwhile, Will's mother, Joyce (Winona Ryder), and big brother, Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), work desperately with Hawkins' police chief, Jim Hopper (David Harbour), to find Will. Does the sudden appearance of a strange girl known only as Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) provide a key to all the mysteries? Or is she the source of Hawkins' supernatural troubles?
Is It Any Good?
With a twisty horror/sci-fi plot and a stellar cast of teen and adult actors, this series channels 1980s favorites like E.T. and Stand by Me to create something fresh and compelling. Stranger Things makes wonderful whole-family viewing because, in addition to the breakneck plotting, there are characters for everyone to relate to: plucky, courageous tweens adrift on a Goonies-style adventure (with a lot more death and monsters); angsty yet valiant teens muddling through romantic complications while they team up to oppose a Big Bad; and bewildered yet fully humanized adults trying to make sense of all the weird stuff that keeps happening.
Said weird stuff—the disappearance of two characters, the sudden arrival of a mysterious girl with even more mysterious powers, and a shadowy federal laboratory keeping the lid on secrets that could upend everything we know about our world—is reckoned with expertly. Each episode contains an explosive revelation and at least a couple of scenes that will have viewers turning to each other open-mouthed. But mysteries and monsters aside, Stranger Things' characters are finely drawn and easy to root for, which makes the spooky stuff all the more gripping. If your family's tastes run toward eerie adventure, you could hardly find a better series to experience together.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the characters' courage in the face of frightening situations. How were they able to summon it? Why is courage an important character strength?
In what ways is Stranger Things similar to popular movies of the 1980s like E.T. or The Goonies? What other movies can you think of in which a band of tweens or teens get together to make something happen or find out the answer to a mystery?
Stranger Things' mysteries are connected to a shadowy governmental lab. What other movies or TV shows can you name that involve a criminal conspiracy connected with the government? Why is this setup frequently used in dramas that involve mystery?
