What's the Story?

From the producers of Dateline comes SURVIVAL MODE, a reality documentary that chronicles how people survived the most catastrophic moments in their lives. From surviving the EF5 tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri in 2011 and the 2023 Maui wildfires, to staying alive during the fatal 2021 Fort Worth highway pileup, each episode tells the stories of three different groups of people who found themselves unexpectedly having to find ways to survive the same deadly situation. Archive images of natural and human-made disasters unfolding reveal how frightening and dangerous they were. Meanwhile, witnesses and survivors offer first-hand accounts of what they did to stay alive and save the lives of others.

Is It Any Good?

Each episode of the harrowing and dramatic docuseries attempts to show the strength and courage of ordinary people who suddenly found themselves doing whatever they could to survive extraordinary events. Between the stories of people who survived catastrophes, witnesses also share what they saw and how they tried to help. Conversations about material and human losses are limited because the folks featured here choose to talk about the positive things they've gained from their experiences, like witnessing their communities coming together to heal and rebuild, and learning lessons about what's most important to them. Some survivors are reunited with the people who helped them. There's a sensational quality to the whole production, and viewers may find some of these narratives familiar from other TV documentaries. Nonetheless, those who enjoy watching true life drama will find Survival Mode to be both compelling and hopeful.
