What's the Story?

TAYLOR is a documentary about superstar Taylor Swift's rise from a teen singer to becoming one of the most powerful musical artists in the world. With the help of interviews with folks like former manager Rick Barker, journalists like Annie Zaleski, former country band member Emily Poe Stumler, and a handful of diehard "Swifties," it examines Swift's conservative roots in country music and how she transcended this to become an icon for girls and young women. Some of the controversies surrounding her over the years are covered, including her encounter with Kanye West at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, the publicity surrounding her dating history, and a public feud with Kim Kardashian. Throughout it all, archive footage of Swift's performances, award appearances, interviews, and tabloid news coverage, along with some animated scenes, help tell her story.

The celebratory documentary offers a third-hand look at Taylor Swift's professional life from the point of view of journalists, fans, and industry players. As Taylor discusses the ups and downs of her 20-year music career, it underscores how she has successfully navigated a patriarchal industry by tapping into a the often-forgotten market of girls and young women while mastering the art of branding and reinvention to remain relevant. Most of the people interviewed for Taylor have limited or no ties to the singer outside of their interest in, and admiration for, her and her work, which sometimes gives it a tabloid-like feel. But some of the conversations, particularly those with her female fans, feel genuine as they offer personal insights about the impact her music has had on them over the years. Swifties will enjoy tuning in and talking about the points of view offered here.
