Ted Lasso: Season 4
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
As we meet back up with TED LASSO in the show's fourth season, he's returned to his home state of Kansas to, as he says, spend some time with his little boy, Henry (Grant Feely), who's not so little anymore, as he's graduating elementary school this year. Meanwhile, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) is harmoniously co-parenting with his ex-wife Michelle (Andrea Anders), and working part-time at a grocery store when he gets a surprise visit from Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), Keeley (Juno Temple), and Higgins (Jeremy Swift) with an interesting proposal: accompany them back to London, to coach the Lady Greyhounds, the fledgling Richmond women's soccer team. Will Ted return to England?
Is It Any Good?
The feel-good, award-winning fish-out-of-water series is back, and the first thing fans want to know is immediately clear: the show is as warm, sweet, and lovable as ever. When Keeley, Higgins, and Rebecca show up on Ted's Kansas doorstep in Ted Lasso: Season 4, he leaps over a bush to greet them with effusive hugs, and immediately spirits them away for Kansas City barbecue. The group's loving, infectious chemistry is still intact, priming fans to settle down for another cozy season in which gaffes will be made, reconciliations will be forged, and interactions will mostly end with hugs and in-jokes amongst friends who've grown comfy with each other over three seasons.
Since Ted agrees to coach a struggling football club in England, it's tempting to see Season 4 as a return to the first season, when, as we will remember, Rebecca hired new-to-football coach Ted as an attempt to ruin the A.F.C. Richmond team and disappoint her philandering ex-husband. And indeed, the Lady Greyhounds are struggling, as is the franchise itself, beset with financial troubles. But this time around, Lasso arrives with a rep, great relationships with his colleagues, and plenty of football coaching experience, as well as his family (Michelle and Henry both agree that moving to London for a change of scenery would be nice). But since Ted's no longer with the Richmond men's team, expect former regular cast members to show up only for cameos or guest appearances, and for Ted to struggle with a brand new set of players and co-workers, chief amongst them humorless assistance coach Alice (Tanya Reynolds), who's no fan of Ted's folksy motivation style. It's a solid return for a much-loved series that should delight fans new and old.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how TV shows change as they go on for multiple seasons. Do most TV shows get to a fourth season? How have the characters or the drama/comedy changed as Ted Lasso has had more episodes? Is this consistent with the changes to other TV shows that have aired for more than three seasons?
What are some of Ted's defining character traits? How do other characters respond to his optimism? Ted is portrayed as a very positive person, but does he also have flaws?
How do the characters demonstrate effective communication, empathy, integrity, perseverance, and teamwork? Do you consider the characters role models?
