What's the Story?

In Territory, the Lawson family has owned Marianne Ranch for generations. With the family patriarch, Colin, aging out of competency, rivals competing to take over all or parts of his dynasty are coming out of the woodwork. But there's struggle within the family as well, as a wayward nephew reappears and takes a leadership position over some of his uncles and aunts.

The Australian Outback isn't quite as an exciting a setting as one might hope. That's a shame for Territory, because it's just about the one unique thing the series has got. Otherwise, it's content to be a boilerplate knockoff of Yellowstone and other family dramas that pit a wealthy dynasty against a slew of hungry competitors (Succession? Dallas?). Anna Torv is excellent in a central role, but Territory tends to put its other actors in stock roles: abusive patriarch, check! Young up-and-comer, check! Secret lover, check! Checking all the boxes for comfort television isn't necessarily a bad thing, but this is a copy of a copy of a copy. Start with the originals.
