What's the Story?

THE ASUNTA CASE (aka El caso Asunta) is a Spanish dramatic miniseries based on a sensational murder case in Santiago de Compostela. In 2001, Rosario Porto (Candela Peña) and Alfonso Basterra (Tristán Ulloa), an upper-middle-class professional married couple, were the first in Galiçia, Spain, to adopt a baby from China. In 2013, 12-year-old Asunta (Iris Whu) is found dead at the side of a road near Rosario's late parents' house. Agents Cruces (María León) and Ríos (Carlos Blanco) quickly uncover enough evidence to convince Judge Malvar (Javier Gutiérrez), one of Rosario's former schoolmates, to arrest her while at her daughter's funeral and charge her with murder. Things get worse when her now ex-husband Alfonso is also arrested and charged with their daughter's killing.

Kids say : Not yet rated

The somber true crime series offers a dramatic interpretation of the events surrounding the murder of Asunta Fong Yang Basterra and the arrest and subsequent conviction of her adoptive parents for her death. The Asunta Case presents the story in a non-linear way, and is a little slow going at the beginning. The narrative picks up, though, often relying on flashbacks or on jumping forward months at a time. Adding to this are the ongoing stories of other cast members like Agent Cruces and Judge Malvar, which add interest, but sometimes makes it harder to focus on key details from the criminal case.
