What's the Story?

The most interesting thing about aspiring MMA fighter Taylor (Melvin Boomer) is that his unwavering self-belief is clearly delusional. The Cage mostly feels like a by-the-numbers sports drama (with absolutely zero subtext), except that it's unclear whether viewers should actually be rooting for its protagonist. Taylor says he's a good fighter over and over, but his work in the ring mostly says otherwise. The series captures enough behind-the-scenes MMA to be interesting for fans of the sport, but it's unclear how much of a model fighter its hero should actually be.
