The Carol Burnett Show
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW is an old-school sketch variety show led by the legendary eponymous comedian. It ran for 12 seasons from the late 1960s to the late '70s. The series racked up 70 Emmy nominations and 25 wins, making household names of comedians like Harvey Korman and Vicki Lawrence. Guest stars included showbiz legends like Ella Fitzgerald, George Carlin, Peggy Lee, The Carpenters, Steve Martin, and Vincent Price. The show was renowned for its pop-culture parodies, slapstick physical humor, and outrageous sketches, which were often punctuated with wild song-and-dance numbers.
Is It Any Good?
The series is full of free-wheeling buffoonery, colorful costuming, and energetic performances; it also veers into blatant racism that casts a shadow over the entire production. The Carol Burnett Show did an admirable job of centering female performers at a time when many had to fight to be in charge. Some sketches are enjoyable, innocent bits of pure absurdity and silliness. Others are truly distasteful scenarios that just don't hold up under modern scrutiny.
In one sketch, Burnett plays a Charo-like character who giggles her way through a scene while wiggling her hips and speaking in an over-the-top exaggerated Latino accent. In another, Tim Conway and Harvey Korman play two men of Asian descent -- it is unclear exactly where they're supposed to be from -- who speak nonstop gibberish to one another while using offensive and demeaning stereotypical accents the entire time. Bits like this bring the laughs to a grinding halt. Also, many of the films and shows they lampoon such as Love Story and National Velvet are widely unknown by kids today. Tuning in may be enjoyably nostalgic for certain older viewers who are able to put these issues into some kind of historical perspective, but kids would really need an adult to help provide context and critique -- or to just fast-forward through the regrettable stuff altogether.
