The Carters: Hurts to Love You
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Produced by Soleil Moon Frye (Kid 90), THE CARTERS: HURTS TO LOVE YOU follows the tragic story of the Carter family—from their modest beginnings in Tampa, Florida to the explosive rise of Nick Carter and Aaron Carter as child stars. With heartbreaking home videos and candid interviews, the series explores how neglect, addiction, abuse, and the pressures of fame devastated a family already fragile at its core. Told primarily through the eyes of Nick and his twin sister Angel, it's a cautionary tale about the cost of stolen childhoods and the healing that comes from telling the truth.
Is It Any Good?
While the story arc may feel familiar—child stars, toxic parents, addiction, tragedy—the access to personal footage, raw interviews, and devastating familial pattern sets it apart. The honesty from Nick and Angel Carter gives The Carters: It Hurts to Love You real emotional weight, and the inclusion of the largely untold experiences of the girls in the family adds needed depth. Though difficult to watch, it's a powerful account of what can happen when childhood is treated as a commodity as well as the healing powers of therapy and asking for help.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about what protections should be in place for children in the entertainment industry. The series shows how the Carter children were thrust into fame with little oversight or support. Families can discuss how laws, advocacy groups, and ethical standards could better protect young performers from exploitation.
What role does therapy play in healing from abuse and addiction? One of the series' most powerful messages is how therapy offered a path to healing for surviving family members. How can professional support be life-changing, even when the trauma feels overwhelming or deeply rooted?
How does this story challenge our ideas about fame and success? Despite the Carter family's wealth and notoriety, their lives were shaped by grief, abuse, and emotional instability. This is a chance to reflect on the myth that fame brings happiness, and to question what success really looks like.
