What's the Story?

Antique book seller Apollo (Lakeith Stanfield) meets cute with librarian Emma (Clark Backo). They begin a relationship even though she plans to move to Brazil -- upon her return, they resume their fairy tale love story, and she becomes pregnant. After the baby is born, Emma begins acting strangely. Is it post-partum depression, or a Brazillian witch's curse? After a horrible tragedy occurs, Apollo finds himself on a journey to find out the truth about his wife and son. In flashbacks, Emma and Apollo's parents' stories are told as well.

Described as a fairy tale, this multigenerational horror story is almost on par with other taut supernatural thrillers like Rosemary's Baby. The Changeling has a lot going on, and it can feel jumbled. Its many flashbacks, myths, and themes may coalesce by the end of the series, but it also takes a while to move the story forward; some viewers may not have the patience to stick around and find out. This could be seen as an atmospheric slow burn, or simply, slow.

The fairy tale qualities are also hit or miss, with a narrator popping in occasionally, and Apollo's frequent declaration, "I am the god Apollo" feels a little too precious after a while. The dusty, literary world of the characters is well-drawn (though Apollo can be a bit of a caricature; always dressed in tweeds and plaids, he even looks like an old book) and Stanfield is excellent as usual.
