What's the Story?
Based on the manhwa (South Korean graphic novel) written by Yongje Park, THE GOD OF HIGH SCHOOL is an anime series about a young man who finds himself competing for a chance to have his wish granted. Seventeen year old Jin Mori (Tatsumaru Tachibana/Robbie Daymond) believes himself to be the strongest kid in high school. He enters the preliminary round of the God of High School (GOH) tournament, a competition that allows all styles of martial arts fighting without a limit on time or weapons used. Participants can also use mystical powers borrowed from supernatural entities to help them. It is here where he mets Yu Mira (Ayaka Ohashi/Veronica Taylor) and Han Daewi (Kentaro Kumagai/Sean Chiplock), both talented fighters who have their own reasons for wanting to win the grand prize, which is to have their greatest wish granted by tournament organizers. They soon find themselves working together, but unbeknownst to them, tournament organizers are using the opportunity to gain the power necessary to create a new world.
Is It Any Good?
This edgy South Korean animated series (which is dubbed in English), combines humor and relationship drama with high energy fighting in a way intended to appeal to teens. The show's narratives also combines themes like mysticism, the use of biotechnology, and political and corporate corruption, all of which helps create an interesting fantasy world that the cast must negotiate. Those who enjoy Japanese anime may find The God of High School's manhwa storytelling style a little different, but chances are they'll have no problem being entertained by it.
