What's the Story?

THE GOOD MOTHERS follow the women of the 'Ndrangheta, a powerful Mafia, working with prosecutors to take the organization down. Denise (Gaia Girace) has spent seven years in witness protection with her mother (Micaela Ramazzotti), due to her father's Mafia activities. Much to Denise's glee, she and her mother reconnect with him. But when her mother goes missing and her father is tight-lipped on the matter, Denise's family fantasy is shattered. Parallel to Denise is Giuseppina (Valentina Belle) daughter of a Mafia leader. She struggles under her father's reign in drug trafficking while balancing motherhood. Meanwhile, prosecutor Anna (Barbara Chichiarelli) finally sees a way to take the Mafia down once and for all: teaming up with the women who dare to defy the 'Ndrangheta.

Even with an explosive start, this series eases viewers into a complex storyline. The Good Mothers is gripping and intricate, and the fact that it's based on a true story makes it even more interesting. The strong language and drug use make this more suitable for older teens, but there's lots of potential for parents to have conversations surrounding gender and stereotypes.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about attitudes towards gender shown in The Good Mothers. Even though this is set in 2010, how were gender roles being enforced? What obstacles were women facing? Do you see any of these in today's climate?

  • It's shown that many women in the Mafia didn't necessarily choose to be involved, they were either married or born into it. How does this affect their lives personally? Are there any pros or cons to this life? Do you think it's fair?
