The Greatest Rivalry: India vs. Pakistan
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
THE GREATEST RIVALRY: INDIA VS. PAKISTAN is a sports docuseries about the historic rivalry between the national cricket teams of India and Pakistan. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Great Britain introduced cricket to its colonies as a way of exporting "civilized" British culture and differentiate the elite from indigenous communities. Today the sport enjoys massive popularity in the West Indies and in Southern Asia, the latter which features the biggest rivalry between two countries in cricket history. Now former and current players like India's Virender Sehwag and R. Ashwin, and Pakistan's Waqar Younis and Shoaib Adkhtar talk about the pressure they face while playing cricket against the backdrop of this strife, the foundation of which lies in the conflicts that arose after the 1947 division of British India and the creation of Pakistan. While athletes talk about what transpired during past matches between the two countries, sportswriters offer additional details and historical perspectives. But despite being on opposite sides, they all reveal how cricket and continues to serve both countries politically, and how its brought together two countries whose people are historically connected together.
Is It Any Good?
The talky sports docuseries chronicles the rivalry between India and Pakistan's cricket teams and how deeply entrenched it is in Pakistan-Hindustan history. The Greatest Rivalry: India vs. Pakistan highlights how the love of cricket—and the desire for the two teams to play each other—has overshadowed the political strife between the two countries. Meanwhile, players, including the swaggering Shoaib Akhtar, who's considered the fastest bowler in cricketing history, offer moment-by-moment reconstructions of what happened during some of the biggest matches between India and Pakistan. Some of these narratives get tiresome, and major cricket fans likely will wonder why certain players are included in the production versus others, and why some news-making events within the cricket world are glossed over. But if your knowledge of cricket is limited, The Greatest Rivalry: India vs. Pakistan may offer just enough detail about this historic rivalry to find it interesting.
