This alternate history science fantasy action anime at best just doesn't stand out, and at worst disappoints. The Irregular at Magic High School is heavy on the world-building but light on character development and themes. Characters are more like anime tropes than they are complex, fleshed-out individuals. They may resonate with some viewers, but the larger themes are still pretty basic. It's an OK watch if you can look past the flirting between siblings, but there are also better series out there that may be more worth your time.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about world-building. How does the magic system in this futuristic world affect the way people treat one another? How does it affect the way people feel about themselves and their place in the world?

  • What is the main message of each story arc? What messages carry through the entire series? Are the messages effective? Why or why not?

  • Families can talk about violence in media. How do comedy and exciting action scenes make us view violence differently? How would this influence our own lives?
