What's the Story?

In THE KINGS OF NAPA, everything is top shelf. The Kings' villa in Napa is impeccable, their clothes are made in Milan, their meals are served by maids dressed in uniform, and their cars are exquisite. Middle child August King (Ebonee Noel, Still Star-Crossed) aspires to launch a new line of wines, taking the opportunity to pitch the idea to her family of vintners at their weekly meal. Though her mother (Karen LeBlanc) insists there's to be no business at the dinner table, August is granted permission to make the pitch by her father (Isiah Whitlock, Jr. The Mist), who favors her. But as the family begins to discuss August's idea, something unexpected occurs, and the Kings' lives are changed forever. Will they be able to come together when inside forces are pushing them apart?

Visually alluring, especially to those who enjoy shows that feature lifestyles of the super wealthy, this family drama gleams with glitz. What The Kings of Napa lacks is depth. Successful family dramas -- especially those portraying this much wealth -- must have characters who do more than slurp wine and sling insults; they need to entice the viewer to trust that the skeletons are worth digging up.

Teens could get giddy over the gorgeous outfits and glamorous settings. Adults might hang in there to get the dirt on a character. But this show misses an opportunity to delve to a more intense, mysterious place, where the real family treasures are hidden.
