What's the Story?

THE LADY'S COMPANION follows the journey of Elena (Nadia de Santiago), a young woman who becomes a chaperone for the Mencía sisters in their quest to find suitable husbands. Hired by their father, Don Pedro (Tristán Ulloa), Elena ensures the girls' safety and reputations while introducing them to high society. As Elena navigates her responsibilities, she forms bonds with each of the sisters, guiding them as they pursue love and independence on their own terms. Along the way, Elena must grapple with her own ambitions and secrets, as well as the challenges of a society that values appearances and tradition over authenticity and personal freedom.

This Spanish period romance dramedy attempts a twist on Bridgerton by shifting the focus to a chaperone. Elena, The Lady's Companion and skilled matchmaker, constantly breaks the fourth wall, talking directly to the camera—a quirky but intimate stylistic choice that showcases Santiago's charming performance. Elena's interactions with the teen girls are often warm and believable, providing some moments of sincerity. And the show has occasional creative flourishes, like intricate hand-drawn animations to introduce characters.

But its costume design is gaudy and plastic-like, making the production feel cheap and off-brand. Despite colorful visuals that clearly intend to be eye-catching, the oversaturation will make some viewers nauseous. There's also a strange genre mishmash that blends soapy telenovelas and suspenseful flashbacks exploring Elena's mysterious past. Trying to juggle so many conflicting elements and even a coming-of-age subplot leaves the show disjointed. The Lady's Companion clearly bites off more than it can chew, resulting in a frustratingly scattered and overly busy viewing experience.
