What's the Story?

In THE LOST FLOWERS OF ALICE HART, a child named Alice (Alycia Debnam-Carey) watches as her mother and father dance lovingly in their kitchen, a sprig of yellow flowers tucked in her pregnant mother's hair. But between the happy moments in the Australian countryside lurk bouts of horrible violence. Though the family tries to cover up the father's wrongdoing, the librarian (Asher Keddie), who witnesses the bruise-covered Alice wandering into town, gets the police involved. Soon Alice is thrust into a terrifying situation that upends her life completely, bringing her into contact with her estranged grandmother, June (Sigourney Weaver, Avatar: The Way of Water), the owner of Thornfield wildflower farm. Will Alice find her way through the secrets and lies that enshroud her family's past? Will she find herself at home among the women at her grandmother's farm?

This slow, lush burn of a show has lots of twists to keep viewers hooked, but violence against women and girls here leaves a mark. It's not easy to shed the sadness that pervades The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, which is exactly the point. The cries that escape from the beatings is not a siren song of forgetting, rather, this show makes a point of remembering. The poetic, creepy language of the flower growers lends even more depth to this layered story.

Sensitive viewers and younger teens may find the intimate violence too intense for casual fare. Fans of intricate mysteries with buried secrets will enjoy this show the most.
