The Most Beautiful Flower
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Mich (Esmeralda Soto) is a vibrant, confident teenager. Her larger body and curly black hair do not fit the standard of beauty in her community. She dreams of no longer being invisible in high school and of being more popular than her slim, blonde, straight-haired cousin, Brenda (Michelle Olvera). In her obsession to stand out, she experiences love setbacks, the estrangement of her friends, and discovers her own beauty.
Is It Any Good?
This a colorful and entertaining teen comedy-drama follows the challenges of a fat teen who dreams of being the most popular girl in her school. The Most Beautiful Flower (a Mexican show available dubbed and subtitled in English) touches on themes that resonate with any young person: the quest to fit in, to be noticed, liked, and accepted. Throughout the 10 episodes, we see various characters, including the most popular ones, realize their vulnerability and experience stumbling blocks.
The romantic entanglements develop with mischievousness and some encounters are surprising. Most of the performances are convincing. Esmeralda Soto's (Mich) performance stands out for its magnetism, freshness, and sympathy. The script, however, sometimes leads the characters to exaggerations that turn into clichés. Set in Xochimilco, south of Mexico City, the story involves family traditions and is charmingly set among canals and trajineras (wooden boats decorated in contrasting colors). The Most Beautiful Flower succeeds in exploring the teenage world of making romantic choices, making friends, and being respected, without resorting to high drama.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Discuss the bullying and fatphobia in the show. What are some forms of bullying, and how do the characters deal with it? Are there consequences for this behavior? Why is that important?
Is Mich a role model? Why or why not? Do the filmmakers portray her appearance with dignity? How does the show demonstrate the character strength of empathy?
Do you think being different from your society's beauty standards prevents you from relating to others or fulfilling your dreams? Have you felt different in any area of your life?
Families can talk about striving to be popular and accepted. Is it a positive thing to try to be? Do you feel popular or invisible at your school?
