What's the Story?
THE QUEEN OF FLOW (known as La reina del flow in Spanish) is a Colombian musical drama about a talented young singer seeking revenge against the people who murdered her family and had her falsely imprisoned. Seventeen years ago Yeimy Montoya was a teenage aspiring reggaetón singer living in Medellín with her parents, who ran a local bakery. While she's helping friends Charly Cruz (Carlos Torres), on whom she has a major crush, and his best friend Juan "Juancho" Camilo (Andrés Sandoval) perform in a music contest, Charly's uncle, local drug lord Dúver Cruz (Lucho Velasco), is shaking down Yeimy's parents for a local "protection fee." Eventually a chain of events lands her in prison in the United States. Now Charly, known as "Charly Flo" in the business, is a major music star, and Yeimy is starting a new life as Tammy Andrade, seeking a new career, and setting her sights on taking the Cruz cartel down.
Is It Any Good?
The soapy Colombian series (available subtitled in English) combines the drama of the classic telenovela with the flair of a musical. The narrative combines its share of flashbacks, emotional moments, far-fetched events, and occasional cliffhangers with lots of music video-like scenes and on-stage concert performances. All of this is furthered by a strong cast. But the show's colorful moments don't take away from the fact that The Queen of Flow's overall premise is rooted in the drug trade, and that the events associated with it, as in real life, are extremely violent. Nonetheless, if you're looking for some contemporary, bingeable telenovela entertainment, this series has something to offer.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about reggaetón. This genre of music originated from Puerto Rico in the 1990s, and combines Panamanian reggae and hip-hop. How did it become so internationally popular? How do performers from different countries create their own unique styles?
What is it about The Queen of Flow that gives it its international appeal? Is it the cast? The plot? The music? Or is it the fact that what happens throughout isn't really plausible?
