What's the Story?

THE RAINMAKER follows Rudy Baylor (Milo Callaghan), a young lawyer who fails to impress Leo F. Drummond (John Slattery), the head of a high-powered law firm. Hoping to practice instead of bartending at the local bar, Rudy's boss Prince Thomas (Tommie Earl Jenkins) informs him about a fledgling law firm who needs a new lawyer. Rudy finally finds a place to make his way in the legal world and take on Drummond in the process while fighting for clients who have been looked over in the system.

The Rainmaker is a slightly slow build, but the series heralds a resurgence of USA's "Blue Skies" programming. It's nostalgic in the way, as well as in the fact that the series is based on John Grisham's 1995 novel and subsequent 1997 film. In more ways than one, fans of the legal drama will feel comforted by The Rainmaker's old-school aura.

The series doesn't push the needle on legal dramas, which can be seen as a positive if, again, you love the nostalgic and comforting feel of legal dramas. However, if you are not one for nostalgia, the compelling performances create a reason to return to the series over and over again. Overall, The Rainmaker is a solid entry in USA's plethora of legal dramas.
