What's the Story?

From the creator of Outer Banks comes THE RUNAROUNDS, a drama about a group of recent high school graduates who are trying to become a great American rock band. Eighteen-year-old Charlie Cooper (William Lipton) got into college but would rather make a career out of playing guitar with his band, The Futhermuckers, and write love songs that change the world. He also hopes that he can finally date his crush, school valedictorian Sophia Kinney (Lilah Pate), who happens to be dating someone else. Charlie's philosophical pot-smoking friend Neil Crosby (Axel Ellis) is happy to be a part of the venture, especially if it means not having to work for his father's business. Guitarist Topher Park (Jeremy Yun) loves the idea, too, despite the fact that his parents and long-time girlfriend Amanda (played by Kelley Pereira) expect him to go Princeton and eventually become a Wall Street millionaire. Also on board is drummer Pete Antuna (Maximo Salas), a good friend who doesn't have any talent. Luckily, Bez Willis (Zendé Murdoch), a third-generation drummer, decides to audition for the crew after a mishap at Pete's house, and brings along his anxious friend Wyatt Wysong (Jesse Golliher), who's secretly a musical genius. The five soon realize that they have the talent and chemistry needed to take the band to the next level, and start doing what they can to break into the industry. But there's lots of rivalry, and getting the attention of a label isn't easy. Neither is convincing their parents that being in a rock band is a suitable career, which means that if they can't make it work by the end of the summer, they will be forced to part ways. It's all going by fast, but Sophia and Amanda's friend Ruthie, a.k.a. Bender (Marley Aliah), is documenting it all.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 1 ):
Kids say ( 1 ):

The lightweight coming-of-age series features real-life Runarounds band members playing fictional characters, giving the musical performances a realistic feel. The storylines are rushed, there few conversations of substance, and some of The Runarounds cast members aren't the best actors (the band was originally formed for the TV series Outer Banks). But the characters are likable, and the overall series features lots of romance, rivalries, mishaps, and music, all of which are contextualized in improbable narratives that fit into young adults' music career fantasies. Also gratifying is the show's soundtrack, the performances of which include the real-life band's original music and songs performed by The Kinks, Wylderness, and the Golden Toadstools. The endless smoking, drinking, and over-the-top moments makes The Runarounds a little much for young teens, but older teens (and even some adults) may find it an entertaining binge watch.
