What's the Story?

THE SEDUCTION finds former servant, Isabelle (Anamaria Vartolomei) is tricked into marrying someone who claims to have a higher social standing than he does. She becomes associated with the well-known Madame Rosemonde (Diane Kruger), and together they attempt to regain their social standing and gain wealth using manipulation and seduction. As they move through the French nobility ranks, they encounter passion, pain, and varying degrees of wealth and respect.

This French production is a fun watch if you're in the mood for a saucy period piece. In The Seduction, pouty french men and broody, blushed women in tightly bound bodices behave as if they are in a live game of chess. There's a lot of full-frontal nudity and orgies in episode one, so be choosy about who you watch it with, but the story unfolds at a brisk clip and has potential to deliver a truly messy—if not deliciously wicked—storyline. It's a lighthearted and escapist watch.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about visual symbolism within The Seduction; the white ribbon around the neck signals virginity, for instance. Are there symbols that we use in our society today to communicate social status without words, whether in the clothes we wear or ways we decorate our homes? What do you try to signal about yourself within your friend and family circles?

  • French nobility in The Seduction have titles such as duc (duke), marquis (marquis), comte (earl), vicomte (viscount), and baron (baron). While the men hold these titles, the madam and Isabelle operate in their own circles of power. What do you think of the way these women and men conduct themselves in order to achieve their goals?
