What's the Story?

THE SIGNING is a Spanish (available with English subtitles) music talent competition focusing on the Urbano Latino genre. Twelve competitors from Latin America and the U.S. must impress Rauw Alejandro, Nicki Nicole, Yandel, Tainy, and Lex Borrero to score a contract. Every episode has a challenge, generally to write a song about a topic -- love, origins, etc. -- and perform it in front of a live audience in a club. Those who impress get to sing another day, while those who don't are eliminated. The singer who impresses the judges the most during the big live performance wins a recording contract.

This competition show has some of the winning formula elements of American Idol and The Voice but falls short. For starters, The Signing focuses on only one genre: Urbano Latino, also known as reggaeton. The judges, well-known artists Rauw Alejandro, Nicki Nicole, and Yandel, don't perform at any point in the competition. They don't coach, either, leaving little room for the contestants to grow as artists in a few weeks. They only receive their feedback at the end of each performance, and the premise is to sign or offer a contract to the artist who impresses the judges, but some of the competitors don't have enough experience in front of the public.

Despite the rushed feeling, the competition is based on the ability to be songwriters and performers, and some of the contestants are legitimately talented. The judges provide constructive feedback, and it's a positive thing to see Nicki Nicole and the female contestants stand out in a genre dominated by men until a few years ago. In short, if you like the music of J. Balvin, Karol G, or Bad Bunny, you'll enjoy this entertaining competition.
