What's the Story?

THE SURROGACY starts with the attempted kidnapping of Yeni (Shani Lozano). When her father protects her, he kills a man in the process and is jailed. The affluent family who ordered the kidnapping uses this to manipulate Yeni into being a surrogate in exchange for the release of her father. Since surrogacy in Mexico is illegal, Yeni is forced into isolation, monitored, and controlled throughout her pregnancy. After she gives birth to twins, one is discovered to have a disability, and Matriarch Nora (Leticia Calderón) wants it terminated. But Yeni wakes up, discarded on a park bench, with the one baby in her arms. How will she grapple with her new normal? Will the family find out about the second child?

Our review:

This series explores the harsh realities of predatory pregnancies. The Surrogacy is dark, dramatic, and tense. The story is intriguing, though has some jarring time jumps. Conversations about morality, classism, and gender are frequent; parents could use them as talking points with their teens. There's some cursing and quite a bit of gun violence and blood, so it's more suitable for older viewers.
