What's the Story?

THE SYNANON FIX tells the story of Synanon, a drug rehabilitation program founded in the 1950s that evolved into a notorious cult. The documentary traces how the organization that initially set out to help recovering addicts became a hotbed for abuse and criminal behavior.

This docuseries might be one of the most extreme examples of the true crime genre testing the limits of when entertainment simply becomes an indulgence in others' suffering. While the story of an addiction recovery center turned cult may be fascinating, The Synanon Fix consistently uses archival footage of emotional abuse to make its points. In one sequence, it shows footage of extreme emotional abuse perpetuated against children. Plenty of fictional dramas show characters being abused, but there's a profound difference between that and watching a child experience deep trauma in real time. There may be value in viewers gaining an understanding how cults work, but it feels like the series crosses the line from entertainment to exploitation.
