What's the Story?

THE WONDERFOOLS is a K-drama/comedy that takes place in the fictional Haesong City circa late 1999. The story centers on Eun Chae-ni (Park Eun-bin), a terminally ill girl better known by locals as "Trainwreck" due to her seemingly innate talent for getting into trouble and embarrassing her grandmother. Chae-ni's life takes a wildly unexpected turn after she's exposed to toxic waste and develops superpowers, an event that ultimately leads to her bonding with a small group of fellow citizens going through the same thing. None of them are very good at controlling these newfound powers, but they still find themselves stepping in as accidental heroes when their city is threatened by various unpredictable forces, including a cult of doomsday preppers and a sicko mad scientist who may be more connected than they think.

Comparisons to X-Men and The Umbrella Academy seem like a given, but this absurd, playful, not-so-superhero series has a vibe all its own. The slapstick humor and goofy, gooey special effects may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the veteran actors here, especially Kim Hae-sook as Trainwreck's grandmother, bring enough gravitas to keep The Wonderfools feeling balanced and not too one-note. There's chaos and drama right alongside the comedy, and the intertwined narratives and twists make a second season seem like a no-brainer.

  • How do the characters in The Wonderfools demonstrate teamwork? Why is this an important character strength?
