What's the Story?

THIRST TRAP: THE FAME. THE FANTASY. THE FALLOUT. is a two-episode docuseries about former landscaper Will White, a young and hunky Canadian guy who gained a rabid online following after posting flirty lip-sync videos on TikTok. Perhaps because he used older songs like Barry Manilow's "Mandy" in his videos, he attracted thousands of middle-aged moms who even formed fan clubs for him—the most famous being the "Grotto Girls." White's fans showered him with cash and gifts; some even flew to Canada in hope of spotting him around his hometown. But when word spreads that White had slept with one of his fans, who went by the screen name "DisneyMom," the fandom erupted with infighting, jealousy, accusations, and drama.

There was no reason to stretch this story into two episodes, especially given how superficial it is. Thirst Trap: The Fame. The Fantasy. The Fallout. is a straightforward account of how White became famous, how his fan clubs formed, and how they eventually turned on one another. What's never addresses is what compels so many middle-aged women to devote their time and money to a handsome man with a flashy but ultimately meaningless social media presence. One fan claims she gave him cash totaling six figures—what drives this kind of loneliness and adoration? The series is interesting in that you can hardly believe adult human beings live like this, but when it comes to understanding anyone's motivations or how their behavior might reflect larger societal issues, it falls frustratingly flat.
