This City Is Ours: A Crime Family Saga
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
THIS CITY IS OUR is a British production that focuses on crime family boss Ronnie Phelan (Sean Bean) and his right-hand man, Michael Kavanagh (Jamie Nelson-Joyce). As Ronnie prepares to step down as leader, Michael must balance his ambition with his desire to start a family with his girlfriend, Diana (Hannah Onslow).
Is It Any Good?
Many crime family dramas borrow plot points from The Godfather; few do it as overtly as this British show. Michael Kavanagh may not be boss Ronnie Phelan's legitimate son, but his character in This City Is Ours is otherwise strikingly similar to Michael Corleone's. Likewise, the series navigates familiar themes of balancing criminals' personal lives with their ruthless, violent, business selves. But it fails to say anything interesting about Britain the way The Godfather subtly tells the story of 20th-century America through Michael's rise. The series is clearly meant to scratch an itch for those who love the genre, but they're not going to get the complexity and impact that might come from simply revisiting the classics.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the family dynamic. Who are Ronnie's family members? What roles do they play in the family and in the business? How does Michael fit in?
How would you describe Michael's motivations? Is there internal conflict? If so, how does it manifest itself? How do his actions help him achieve the life he wants?
What is Diana's perception of Michael's job? How does she feel about Ronnie's business? How does this affect her relationship with Michael?
